Despite being technically considered a desert, and a high altitude one on top of that, Spiti si far from devoid of vegetation. Most obvious are willows and poplars that nowadays dot many parts of the entire valley, and in the lower parts nowadays you can find big seabuckthorns, birches, cypresses, robinias and plantations of apple trees and some apricots as well. Less intrusive but beautiful, colorful flowers are found on the slopes and along streams and fields, sometime covering extensive areas that give a welcome note of brightness to an otherwise dull looking landscape. Many of the same genera, but with different species, are present in most mountainous area of the planet. Some are used by the Amchis of Spiti, the local doctors who manufacture their own medicines.
